IOF Senior Event Adviser David May (GBR) commented: “I fully support this change. With COVID 19 restrictions are constantly changing, which involves that many potential competitors are still waiting  before entering. Such change does not affect financially anyone  and will allow more time for those who wishes to run in Gargano”.

He also added: “I’ve been contacted by quite a few fellow orienteers asking about weather conditions and about travel in and around the Event Centre of Vieste. As Senior Event Adviser, I need to analyse and evaluate also that a WMOC will meets the needs of the competitors, and I in this case I have to say that I am happy that it will definitely be so. The average maximum temperature in Vieste in early July is 26C – very nice for holiday – which means that on the peak hours it can be rather warm for running. For this reason it was decided that the Sprint races will be held in the early morning when it is cooler.

The forest races will be run in Foresta Umbra, a plateau laying at around 800 m altitude, where temperature are 4C to 5C cooler than in Vieste and the tree cover will provide plenty of shade too. Both the limited parking spaces and for an environmental-oriented decision, most of orienteers will reach the race venues by organised busses departing always from Vieste bus terminal. Such organisation involved a great effort from the WMOC 2022 team but I am sure that  competitors will appreciate bussing ‘taking the strain’ rather than going by car”.
